Renaissance Wax: Professional-Grade Preservation for Bronze

Renaissance Wax is the world’s most trusted wax polish for conservation and protection of fine bronze artworks. Originally developed by the British Museum, this microcrystalline wax is used by institutions and conservators worldwide due to its superior clarity, durability, and resistance to environmental elements.

When applied to a bronze plaque, Renaissance Wax forms a thin, protective layer that resists moisture, airborne pollutants, and UV exposure. Unlike natural waxes, it does not yellow over time, ensuring that the sculpture’s surface remains visually true to its original finish.

Durability and Outdoor Use

Renaissance Wax is ideal for outdoor bronze plaques, where weathering is a concern. Its microcrystalline structure creates a barrier that is both flexible and robust, allowing it to withstand temperature fluctuations and environmental stress. With proper care—typically a light reapplication once or twice a year—bronze can remain richly toned and well-protected for decades.

Care Instructions

  • Annual Maintenance: Lightly clean the plaque with a soft cloth to remove dust and dirt. Apply a thin coat of Renaissance Wax with a lint-free cloth or soft brush.

  • Buffing: After application, gently buff the surface with a clean cloth to restore sheen.

  • Reapplication: Depending on exposure, reapply every 6–12 months for optimal protection.

Embracing the Patina

While Renaissance Wax preserves the surface and slows oxidation, it does not permanently seal the metal. Over time, bronze may still develop a natural patina—a green or brown hue known as verdigris. This transformation is part of bronze’s charm and can be embraced as a sign of its noble aging process.

Whether you maintain a gleaming finish or allow the bronze to develop its natural patina, Renaissance Wax ensures that your memorial remains dignified, protected, and enduring.

Your bronze portrait plaque is crafted to last for generations. To help you maintain its appearance, we’ve included a small jar of premium Renaissance Wax and a piece of soft towelling. These allow you to care for your plaque easily every 6 to 12 months.

How to Use:

1. Clean: Gently wipe the surface with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust or surface debris.

2. Buff: Lightly rub the surface with the supplied soft towelling to smooth any oxidation and prepare the metal.

3. Apply Wax: Use a soft cloth or brush to apply a very thin layer of Renaissance Wax.

4. Polish: Allow the wax to dry for a few minutes, then buff gently with a clean cloth to bring out a soft, natural sheen.

Optional: Let It Age Gracefully

If you choose not to maintain the plaque, over time it will develop a natural green patina called verdigris—a beautiful and historically valued finish that adds character and depth. Whether you preserve its luster or embrace its aging, your bronze portrait will remain a timeless tribute.
